This soldier has been tentatively identitfied as 46476 Rifleman Maurice O'Connell. O'Connell enlisted in the NZEF on 4 January 1918, and joined "C" Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifles Brigade 5 April 1918. He was wounded in action on 2 May 1918, suffering compound fractures to his left leg and right foot. Listed as dangerously ill between 2 and 6 May, he was admitted to No.1 New Zealand General Hospital at Brockenhurst, England, on 18 May where his left leg and right foot were amputated. O'Connell arrived back in New Zealand on board the "Arawa" on 15 November 1919, and was discharged "no longer fit for war service on account of wounds received in action" on 14 December the same year.
